Towson University is accepting applications for an Automotive Services Mechanic in the Facilities Management Department. Under general supervision, this position performs automotive work at the journey level and is responsible for inspecting, repairing and maintaining 165 motor vehicles, engines, and 50 pieces of mechanical equipment to determine the nature of malfunctions.
The Automotive Services Mechanic maintains fleet vehicles and landscape equipment including inspecting and testing vehicles and completing preventive maintenance such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation and balancing, and brake system replacement; uses computerized test equipment to ensure compliance with Maryland State Vehicle Safety and DOT Safety Inspection requirements by testing engine operation, mechanical safety testing, and vehicle alignment; keeps vehicles in functional condition by listening to operator complaints; conducting inspections; repairing engine failures; repairing mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions; replacing parts and components as required by ASE standards and manufacturers specifications. The Automotive Services Mechanic ensures compliance with Maryland State Emission Vehicle Standards; maintains vehicle records and repairs using computerized data; interprets vehicle control codes to diagnose and repair engine exhaust and vacuum emission systems; maintains vehicle records by recording vehicle service and repairs using Fleet Management computerized database software for vehicle maintenance. This position keeps the shop equipment operating safely by following operating and preventive maintenance instructions; monitors costs using remaining vehicle warranties and evaluation service and parts options; maintains supplies by inventorying stock, placing order and verifying receipts and invoices.
High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of four years progressively responsible experience in servicing, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles or motor equipment. Candidate must possess comprehensive knowledge of the basic principles of operation, basic components, malfunctions, repair practices and preventive maintenance techniques for internal combustion engines including diesel and motor vehicle systems and sub-assemblies and thorough knowledge of the proper use, care and maintenance of standard hand and power tools. Must be able to life heavy equipment up to 70 pounds. In addition, candidate must possess a valid Maryland Noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license with no more than 5 points. Must have certification as an Automotive Service Maintenance Technician. Ability to secure a CDL license within 6 months of hire preferred. The hired candidate will also be required to attend all training sessions as dictated by Facilities Management (including but not limited to: ladder training, confined spaces, heat stress and asbestos). This is an essential personnel position.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
A Criminal Background Investigation and pre-employment physical with drug testing is required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Salary and Benefits
