Reporting to the IT Director/CIO, the Information Security Manager provides leadership, direction, and technical design/implementation for securing the University’s technological infrastructure and data through best practices. This position will be the primary contributor to developing the institution’s Cybersecurity Program, and will work to develop technical controls and policy/process/procedure with respect to the protection of information assets. The Information Security Manager will ensure compliance where necessary and provide training to technical and non-technical staff around security related issues.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
Research, review, evaluate, recommend, and implement information security solutions, standards, policies, and procedures to protect technological assets; create and update documentation on such items.
Conduct regular cybersecurity risk assessments and serve as primary technical contact for such activity.
Provide information security related training to internal IT staff; develop information security awareness campaigns and educational programs around cybersecurity and disseminate information to campus community.
Analyze existing practices to identify and mitigate weaknesses that could lead to a loss of sensitive data; work with campus community to identify potential risks and develop ways to mitigate these risks.
Identify the need for and implement various tools to assist in analysis of technological infrastructure, such as vulnerability scanners, packet sniffers, password crackers, log analysis, and others.
Analyze and audit network, servers, storage, endpoints and other systems to identify existing vulnerabilities and ensure existing technical security practices are working as designed; redesign and implement technical security practices where necessary in collaboration with IT Infrastructure staff.
Assists IT Director/CIO with long term planning and needs assessment around technical security initiatives.
Keeps abreast of emerging technologies, adapt to changing technology and seek ways to utilize emerging technology solutions.
Bachelor’s degree in Information Security, Computer Science, or related field of study with a minimum of 5 years of information security related experience. Extensive work experience related to information security considered in lieu of degree.
Demonstrated ability to deliver technical information security concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences through training and awareness programs.
Experience with some or all of the following: firewalls, IDS, IPS, virus protection, encryption, vulnerability assessment, policy development.
Experience in a higher education environment preferred.
Industry recognized certifications desired: Security+, CCNA Security, CEH, CISSP, CISM
May be required to provide support nights, weekends and holidays when necessary.
Strong problem solving, quantitative, and analytical ability; ability to troubleshoot and identify root cause, and recommend course of action for resolution.
Proven understanding of current technology and development trends around information security.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment.
Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
