The Retirement System Investment Commission is a defined benefits pension fund responsible for investing and managing all assets held in trust for the participants and beneficiaries of South Carolina’s five state defined benefit plans. We are looking for bright, energetic, well-organized, and effective Private Markets Investment Professionals. Ideal candidates should have a strong investment background and an ability to identify and cultivate strong investment management relationships.
This role supports the implementation of a comprehensive investment program for private market strategies, including private credit (mezzanine, direct lending and distressed) and private equity (venture, growth equity and buyout), by performing sourcing, due diligence, selection and third-party investment manager oversight activities.
Research, source, assess, and monitor investments with managers in adherence with internal processes and within guidelines established by the Investment Commission’s investment policies and Annual Investment Plan.
Assist in the development of strategy recommendations and analysis with respect to diversification, portfolio management, and cash flow requirements.
Conduct special projects (e.g., analysis of private credit, private equity or other holdings, portfolio exposures, performance attribution, portfolio construction, investment strategy, and industry trends).
Prepare and present recommendations and reports as needed for investment decision-making and to ensure that the Managing Director, CIO, Investment Commission and other parties remain informed of key developments in the private markets and their impact on the RSIC’s portfolios.
Work collaboratively with legal, operations, and reporting teams on legal negotiations, performance reporting, and ongoing monitoring of investments.
While we are targeting professionals with the following experience, we will consider hiring candidates with more advanced experience for senior positions.
Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in business, finance, economics, mathematics or similar quantitatively-oriented discipline.
3+ years of successful investment experience implementing any aspect of a private markets investment or credit program.
Strong analytical, quantitative, and critical reasoning skills.
Ability to perform due diligence on private market funds; understanding of relevant legal documents and key terms; ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, consultants, external managers, and others in the investment community.
Evidence of strong relationship skills.
Superior written and verbal communication skills and fluency with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Attention to detail, and ability to juggle multiple tasks, respond to changing priorities, and meet deadlines.
Willingness to roll up sleeves and get work done no matter what the task.
High ethical and professional standards.
Master’s degree in business, finance, or economics or a Bachelor’s degree in the specified fields and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
5+ years of experience in an institutional investment environment with emphasis on private credit or private equity investments.
5+ years of experience in performing initial and ongoing due diligence on private market investments; ability to effectively negotiate the legal documents with internal and external counsel; ability to work effectively with colleagues, consultants, external managers, and others in the investment community.
