Berkeley Lab's BioSciences Area Office Division has an opening for a Director of Laboratory Operations. You will report to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and is responsible for the short- and long-term planning, organization, coordination, management, and day to day oversight of all aspects of the Laboratory Operations Team. The Director of Laboratory Operations will work closely with management, project managers, principal investigators, postdocs, staff research associates, graduate students, undergraduates and administrators to help attain the goals and objectives of all funded projects in the operations center with an eye on outstanding customer service. This role will initiate and develop plans and ensure the delivery of outstanding customer service related to all aspects of lab management at the center with a focus on continuous improvement and safety. This is a critical leadership position for the Emery Station Operations center and will manage the infrastructure required to support the scientific needs of the researchers involved in all scientific programs on the 4th floor of ESE with safety and efficiency. Position responsibilities include supervision of both exempt and non-exempt staff.
What You Will Do:
Provide leadership and oversight to manage the short and long term strategic planning and organization of all technical aspects of ESOC laboratories for all research divisions and programs.
Develop and implement a comprehensive lab and safety orientation for new researchers and research staff. Ensure that all personnel are adequately trained and maintain all training records.
Participate in long-range planning and budgeting processes; determining project personnel and equipment needs; developing and monitoring the laboratory budget; approving purchase of equipment and supplies. Obtains and documents quotes/bids. Manage and oversee procurement processes for all lab purchasing.
Attend and participate in ESE management and group meetings.
Attend and participate in professional work related meetings/conferences to enhance professional development.
Foster collaborative working relationships with all levels of employees at the center. Partner seamlessly and effectively with colleagues in EH&S, the Biosciences Area and all members of partner institutions as needed.
Deliver outstanding customer service and work cooperatively and effectively with others.
Oversee Laboratory Operations services, including monitoring of performance, documentation and improvement in processes, seeking customer satisfaction feedback, and identifying opportunities for gains in efficiency and effectiveness, including:
Cold store performance monitoring, maintenance, and storage management.
Periodic Service and repair of all laboratory instrumentation.
Workflow tracking and prioritization.
Stockroom and supply chain management.
Office and Lab space assignment and utilization.
Chemical and reagent tracking and safety.
Periodic building-wide cleanup days.
Center roster and all connected data sources.
Seismic bracing and security.
Emergency management and continuity of operations.
Glass-washing, autoclaving, and media preparation.
Shipping & Receiving.
Responsible for reports to the COO on the status of responsible areas.
Lead group meetings related to lab management and practices.
Hire, train, supervise and evaluate the performance of laboratory operational support staff; develop work performance standards; schedule and assign work and develop priorities; provide technical expertise as needed or requested; taking appropriate disciplinary/corrective actions. This may include management of lab technicians, administrative staff, research assistants, facilities support and shipping and receiving staff at ESE.
Assist with interviewing, hiring, and termination, of technical research staff. Provide feedback to technical staff supervisors for the purpose of appraising performance.
Establish and revise laboratory policies and procedures; develop and maintain appropriate control and quality assurance procedures; ensure compliance with current safety requirements; coordinate laboratory activities with other state and federal agencies.
Ensure that lab and personnel are compliant with all regulatory issues associated with Institutional safety. Participate in development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) pertaining to institute safety. Roll out and manage procedures as appropriate.
Liaison between researchers and EH&S, Facility manager and other facilities personnel. PI for RWA and chemical inventory.
Maintain current knowledge of advances in laboratory technology; federal and state regulations; and laboratory management.
Manage supplies, track inventory, and order laboratory supplies and equipment to ensure adequate supplies are available. Manage the centralized store room program for general supplies at EmeryStation East.
Coordinate laboratory technicians to optimize laboratory organization and operations; work closely with Building Management and Facility Manager to ensure optimal laboratory technical operations.
Coordinate the placement of undergraduate student lab assistant positions (fellowships, internships, and other programs).
On-call 24/7 for building emergencies. Building Emergency Team coordinator and member for JBEI. Develops appropriate safety and/or service plans with EH&S officers.
Space allocation of office/desk and laboratory benches for researches.
Actively participate in the planning, designing, construction and maintenance of the facility.
In the event of an office laboratory move, coordinate lab and office setup, expansion, relocation and closure. Direct the moving of all equipment, stocks and supplies and determine and organize new locations.
Maintain records, laboratory databases, update wiki (website).
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Assist with special projects as assigned.
What Is Required:
Strong background and understanding of a biological science.
Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience with a minimum of 5 years related work experience with increasing responsibility in program administration and planning.
Experience developing methods and SOPs, creating budgets and cost analysis reports.
Experience and knowledge of supervision, training and writing performance evaluations.
Working knowledge of MTAs, laboratory EH&S requirements, and procedures and practices in administrative areas of responsibility such as procurement and personnel management.
Enthusiastic leader with a proven ability to build strong interpersonal relationships and teams within and outside their sphere of immediate influence.
Strong problem-solving skills and analytical ability. Ability to assess situations accurately and take effective action.
Ability to independently establish priorities; perform multiple projects simultaneously with short deadlines and frequent interruptions, anticipate and identify potential issues; and complete assignments in a timely manner.
Familiarity with state and federal guidelines and regulations pertinent to laboratory safety and security.
Strong organizational skills; strong leadership skills; strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and highly functional in a fast paced, organic team atmosphere.
Demonstrated experience in molecular biology. Also experience in a plant biology and analytical chemistry research laboratory.
Composition and editing skills sufficient to edit and compose grant proposals, progress reports, journal manuscripts and web content for grammar, syntax, style, scientific accuracy and clarity.
Proficiency with computers and associated software such as Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Adobe products, JIRA and other productivity tools.
Ability to lift 20 lbs or more.
Work occasionally includes assisting team members with scraping of freezers and other similar laboratory support tasks.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Minimum of 10 years laboratory management experience preferred.
Advanced degree/PhD preferred.
