The Department of American Culture and Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum (DISC) of the Islamic Studies Program at the University of Michigan invite applications for a 33.33% Lecturer I position beginning September 1, 2018 and ending December 31, 2018.
The successful candidate will perform supplementary teaching activities in support of the live-synchronous digital offering of Islam in/and America taught by Professor Sylvia Chan-Malik of the Rutgers University. This 3-credit course examines the history and presence of Islam in the United States, and the construction and evolution of U.S. Muslim identity, community, and culture. In the contemporary moment, “Islam” is perhaps the most misunderstood term in the national lexicon, and stands at the heart of numerous cultural and political debates about “who we are” as a nation. In this course, Prof. Chan-Malik will simultaneously examine the diverse historical presence of Muslims in the United States, alongside representations and stereotypes of Islam and Muslims in media and popular culture. Students will approach their study of Islam and Muslims through critical frameworks of religion, race, gender, and sexuality, paying particular attention to the experiences and representations of Black American Muslims and U.S. Muslim women.
Under the guidance of Professor Chan-Malik, the candidate will perform supplementary teaching activities, including (but not limited to) preparation, discussions, instruction, holding office hours, grading, and mentoring. The candidate is expected to attend every class lecture and to lead discussion sessions. At the conclusion of the course, the candidate will submit a one-page status report summarizing the course activities and overall course experience.
Applicants must be pursuing or have completed a graduate degree with a focus on Islamic Studies in a relevant field such as international & area studies, literature, history, anthropology, or political science. Teaching experience at the college/university level is preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background and research in Islamic Studies.
