Trinity Health System was formed in 1996 by the coming together of Ohio Valley Hospital (now Trinity Medical Center East) and St. John Medical Center (now Trinity Medical Center West), both in Steubenville, Ohio. Providing care to a service area of just over 200,000 individuals, Trinity represents the most complete healthcare option in eastern Ohio, with a total of over 471 beds and 1,800 employees. Trinity offers a full array of acute and outpatient services on its two campuses. Trinity East focuses on skilled care, long-term care, inpatient physical rehabilitation, and behavioral medicine services (mental health and addiction recovery), as well as outpatient physical rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation, and associated diagnostic services; Trinity West is a full-service acute care facility offering 24-hour emergency care, kidney dialysis, lithotripsy, endoscopy and related services, surgery and medical surgical inpatient units, and all other diagnostic departments.
Reporting to the vice president of operations, the director of pharmacy is responsible for comprehensive strategic and operational pharmacy services leadership for Trinity Health System, serving as a bridge to convey strategies system-wide. He or she will ensure the delivery of safe, legal, effective, and accountable pharmaceutical services across the continuum to ensure high-performance patient experiences of care and clinical excellence for those served.
The director of pharmacy services will:
plan and implement advice to optimize therapeutically appropriate and cost-effective drug use through a Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee process;
through a well-defined pharmacy management structure and operating governance framework, execute strategies and tactics for pharmacy services (clinical and product-level services) across business units and programs, assisting with systemwide implementations; hold accountability for the financial sustainability, regulatory compliance, quality, and operational efficiency of pharmacy services;
lead the development and maintenance of a medical staff/CHI-approved formulary system, monitor drug utilization, and make recommendations to the medical staff for additions and deletions to the pharmaceutical formulary;
provide strategic direction and pharmacy priorities, in coordination with the Trinity Health System clinical strategic plan;
actively engage with Trinity Health System leadership to ensure that the voice of pharmacy services is integrated in any work being planned and/or implemented across the system;
build and maintain strong, positive relationships with medical staff to integrate physicians into decision-making processes and to ensure that clinician needs are heard and addressed;
maintain high employee morale and positive relationships with employees in a manner that results in high employee satisfaction and excellence in patient care delivery;
support and develop pharmacy staff to build a high-performing and productive team;
assist in guiding system direction on key pharmacy technology investment decisions, in partnership with the system’s information technology function;
ensure efficient pharmacy supply chain practices across all business units, maximizing economies of scale and operational efficiencies;
oversee and manage all contracts with pharmacy suppliers and manufacturers;
provide strategic consultative expertise for medication management-related quality initiatives for the system;
champion and cultivate a culture of patient and staff safety;
assist with efforts to strengthen medication safety programs across the system, and advocate for public policy that will improve overall population health, through actively engaging with Trinity’s stakeholders and regional and national organizations
Graduate of an AACP-accredited college of pharmacy (required); an advanced degree (PharmD) in hospital pharmacy or business administration is preferred
Registered pharmacist licensed by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy, or able to attain licensure within 45 days of hire
Completion of an American Society of Healthcare Pharmacists-accredited residency with an administrative emphasis (preferred)
Three years of progressive pharmacy leadership and management experience in a health system/hospital setting, including staff accountability and a proven track record of results
Experience leading and managing a 340(b) drug program across a multiplehospital health system and retail platform
Experience leading an active health system/hospital pharmacy and therapeutics program (preferred)
Experience leading an active health system/hospital antibiotic stewardship program
Experience in pharmaceutical contracting, P&T committee organization, and pharmacy integration in clinical practice
Successful experience in the areas of: cost saving, expenditure controls, revenue enhancement, and efficiencies in healthcare operations, mentoring and coaching, major project coordination, contract negotiation, personnel management, budget preparation and planning, development and monitoring of staff productivity systems, quality improvement and the establishment of quality standards and monitors
Training in negotiation and communications
Familiarity with process improvement approaches and their application in clinical settings
