The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is inviting candidates to apply for one of three full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor positions with duties to start in August 2019 or, if warranted, as early as January 3, 2019.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must have an earned doctorate degree from a regionally accredited university in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering or a closely related engineering field by start date. Candidates must have a strong commitment to both teaching and research. In either case, candidates must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in English. With respect to teaching, applicants must be willing to develop and teach lecture and laboratory courses as needed as well have a minimum of one year of college-level teaching experience (which may include teaching assistant experience). With respect to research, applicants must have publications that highlight strong experimental or computational skills and must be able to explain how they plan to develop a sustainable research program utilizing undergraduate and/or graduate engineering students.
The successful applicant will be required to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate level courses. ME candidates may be asked to teach courses in areas such as Dynamics and Controls, Kinematics and Mechatronics, Thermal Sciences, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Manufacturing processes, or Machine Design; IE candidates may be asked to teach courses in areas such as Manufacturing Systems Design, Production Planning and Management, Operations Research, Facility Layout, Simulation, Lean Manufacturing, or Supply Chain. The successful applicant also will be required to develop and sustain a successful research program related to their area of interest, as required above. Other duties include advising undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum development and providing service work to the department, college, or university as well as with professional societies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will have two or more years of engineering related industrial experience and/or two or more years of college or university teaching experience. The candidate would also be able to demonstrate the ability to support the University’s commitment to equity and diversity and have an established record of research, including grants and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
