JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President of Student Success and the Associate Director for Academic Advisement, the Transfer Advisor is responsible for an advisement caseload and targeted student outreach to facilitate a streamlined transition from community college to Ramapo College, thereby increasing student success at both colleges. The position is designed to strengthen Ramapo’s outreach to the identified community colleges (e.g., Bergen Community College and County College of Morris) and enhance student access to a four-year degree. The advisor will be responsible for establishing a presence on the community college campuses through regular office hours to advise prospective and matriculating transfer students about Ramapo College program requirements and degree options, articulation agreements, and academic policies and procedures. The advisor will maintain a flexible work schedule to accommodate evening hours. The position splits time between work at the identified community colleges and Ramapo College of New Jersey. The Transfer Advisor participates in Admissions and Student Success programs, such as Admitted Student Days, Orientations, and related programs.
Provides comprehensive academic advisement for transfer, at-risk, and other assigned students.
Delivers academic advisement services, which include: academic planning, career exploration, course selection, interpretation of institutional requirements, selection of intended majors/minors, transfer course equivalencies, general education/major/school core/ minor requirements, verifying prerequisite and testing completion, course sequencing, alternate means of earning credit (CLEP /PLEX/NYU Language Testing), appropriate credit loads and graduation requirements.
Coordinates outreach to at-risk students as indicated by predictive analysis and early alert flags from progress reports each semester.
Builds effective partnerships with community college counselors and advisors and maintains availability to answer questions. Develops a sound working knowledge of the various associate degree/college transfer programs at identified community colleges (e.g., Bergen and CCM) and course requirements. Partners with the community colleges to help students understand the pathway to a Ramapo College four-year degree (i.e. participating in student orientation sessions and registration workshops).
Utilizes NJ Transfer to create specific four year degree paths, utilizing 2 year school curricula and Ramapo curricula to show community college students the four year path to a Ramapo degree.
Prior to course registration on the community college campuses, advises prospective transfer students about course recommendations based upon their intent to apply to Ramapo College and their interest in specific RCNJ majors to ensure proper course articulation.
Completes Transfer Credit Equivalencies in concert with Admissions for selected Community College partners.
Increases the visibility of Ramapo College’s Admission Program and meets with students to explain program requirements. Works closely with the Ramapo College Office of Admission to sponsor visitation days for prospective students and to execute follow up and assistance to onsite recruitment events.
Develops web, print, email and other communication resources to distribute accurate curriculum information to prospective transfer students, community college faculty, counselors and advisors.
Presents academic advisement workshops for current and prospective students.
Assists Advisors at both Ramapo College and the community colleges. Meets with the AVP, Associate Director and academic unit heads to participate in advisor training and professional development activities at the community colleges and Ramapo College to ensure familiarity with curricular pathways.
Serves as a liaison to the school/programs as appointed by the Associate Director/AVP of Student Success.
Helps Ramapo faculty understand community college courses and degree programs as needed.
Advises students with Student Success forms, which include off campus study requests, pass/fail forms, substitution forms, repeat fail requests, grade change forms and credit overloads.
Utilizes available technology/programs in the delivery of academic advisement services.
Keeps abreast of academic policies and procedures of the colleges, which include changes in curriculum, academic requirements, and exceptions to the requirements.
Adheres to laws that govern academic advising practices.
Assists the Testing Center staff by serving as a test proctor on an ad hoc basis.
Maintains comprehensive and quality program data and submits monthly/semester reports to the AVP of Student Success.
Completes other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Student Success and the Associate Director of Academic Advisement.
WORK ENVIRONMENT This job operates in a professional office environment on a specific worksite/satellite campus. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
TRAVEL This position requires reporting to a specific office/satellite campus. Location of office/satellite campus will vary and reporting schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Use of personal vehicle will be required for travel to and from work site.
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s degree supplemented by a Master’s degree in a field related to the position to be filled or equivalency as determined by the appointing authority.
Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute required experience on a year-for-year basis (30 credit hours is considered one year of college.)
Significant higher education experience related to the duties specified. Experience interacting with community college students and faculty is preferred. The successful candidate must be student-oriented and possess the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds; have a working knowledge of academic advising best practices and the needs of transfer students; be able to interpret and explain complex academic requirements, policies and procedures and establish collaborative relationships with academic units; be a self-starter with the ability to achieve program goals independently; possess exceptional communication, interpersonal and technological skills and be willing to travel.
