This research chemist position is a unique opportunity for a newly-graduated Ph.D. Chemist to experience a career within Chevron Oronite Company while contributing to important projects and business goals. The successful candidate will join the Oronite Rotational Development Program (ODP), a program developed to accelerate career development and insure Oronite have the technical skills to execute our long-term business objectives. In the program, the candidate will hold three positions in wide-ranging areas of responsibility within the company over a period of three to five years. The positions will be determined based on the candidate’s skills and knowledge, the candidate’s career objectives, and the business needs of Chevron Oronite. The opportunities will be in functional areas such as additive synthesis, formulation research and development, intellectual property and product line technical research. At the end of the program, the candidate will be ready to effectively lead key research programs.
Typical Key Job Responsibilities of Possible Assignments:
Conduct synthesis and analytical characterization of novel additives and performance testing of synthesized additives. A broad set of skills are required including organic synthesis, literature review, and written communication.
Design processes for scale-up of new additives and improve profitability and safety of existing chemical processes. Functions include process sensitivity studies, design and execution of plant trials, interaction with raw material suppliers, and supply chain support.
Independently design, coordinate, and conduct fundamental and applied R&D programs in support of Chevron Oronite’s global lubricant and fuel additive businesses. This includes applying internal combustion engine/chemistry fundamentals as well as advanced problem solving skills to develop new cost competitive additive products and formulations.
New component evaluations, new product and competitive product performance testing in engines and the field, and managing formulation and component changes that impact the product line. Responsible to regional and global customers for Automotive, Natural Gas, Railroad, and Marine Engine Oil additive development.
Process engineer for day to day operation of units within the manufacturing plant. Take responsibility for meeting production plans, product quality, and troubleshooting operational difficulties.
Execute market study to determine a slate of products, technical resource needs to develop and support them, and price positioning to justify investment for new lubricant/fuel product lines in the U.S.
Independent scientific thinking with the ability to propose and carry out independent research programs.
The ability to apply chemistry knowledge in a variety of fields related to the development and synthesis of new additives and develop formulations for a variety of product line applications.
Ability to understand and solve complex problems.
Ph.D. in Chemistry
Strong background in organic, synthetic, physical organic, and/or organometallic chemistry.
Strong analytical / instrumentation skills.
Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with cross-functional teams
Good writing and presentation skills.
