The Seattle Times is excited to announce a recent opening for an Interactives Developer (Web) in the News department! This technical position is actively responsible for helping the newsroom develop, build and implement back-end newsgathering technologies for the daily report and projects. In addition to developing digital storytelling tools that allow readers to interact with our content, successful candidates will be data-driven, and work to improve our digital storytelling and engagement with readers.
As an applicant, you should be comfortable building pages that integrate audio, video, interactive elements, and still images or graphics on both mobile and desktop platforms – as you can with see with examples of our past work here. You should also feel comfortable extending or maintaining our static app scaffolding. Similar to Tarbell or the NPR news template, it handles local development and publishing to S3, and is built on Node. It’s also all open-source: take a look!
Participate in technology training for the newsroom, helping The Seattle Times journalists understand the language and techniques of Web development.
Work closely with an IT manager to maintain a strong relationship with IT and other web developers throughout the company.
Uphold site standards.
Analyze and visualize data.
Work with IT to optimize mobile and desktop offerings. Must document work done on applications, systems, website and workflows.

Experience: Requires three years’ experience or equivalent at a multi-platform news organization. Four years’ experience in front-end development experience required. Experience in cross-functional teams is desired; project management experience preferred.
Education: Requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with modern client-side frameworks – React, Vue or Svelte.
Experience building well-formed, semantic, and accessible markup, including embedded audio and video.
Understanding of template language to simplify and speed up markup development.
Familiarity with Node and NPM.
Ability to create responsive CSS layouts that use floats, flexbox, and the various forms of positioning.
Must be familiar with programming language like SQL and build web scraping tools.
Must be active in the local tech community and in the national news/journalism development community.
Must have knowledge and experience with digital design principles; server- and client-side web development.
Must have strong collaborative capability and inter-personal communication skills.
