UC Berkeley's Information Systems and Technology provides global oversight of campus IT environments plus develops and disseminates technology standards, practices, and architecture. IST is the operational arm of the CIO's team and UC Berkeley's central IT service organization providing IT services, systems, and support to a diverse group of campus and UC system stakeholders.
IST Data & Platform Services team provides cloud, system and database administration for mission critical campus-wide enterprise and department systems. The vast majority of the service provided to campus is performed on an internal cloud environment, based on VMWare, with a burgeoning presence in a number of different public cloud providers.

Lead the VMWare / Internal Cloud team.
Proactively manage over 3000 campus-wide, mission critical and departmental virtual machines, on a number of different VMWare clusters, which underlie such diverse applications as the Enterprise Datawarehouse, Peoplesoft HRMS, Campus Solutions (Student Information System) and Financials. Conduct highly complex vm support activities.
Drive vendor interaction and management, with regards to a number of different technology solutions.
Articulate a vision as to where a hybrid cloud architecture is going within industry. Craft a vision that will apply these constructs to a decentralized, higher education type of environment found on the UC Berkeley campus. Research, evaluate and make complex hybrid cloud design recommendations.
Provide consulting on guidelines and best practices for optimum performance and security within the context of cloud environments (both on prem and public) to campus personnel (system administrators, developers and management).
Develop, implement, document and test complex high availability and backup & recovery strategies. Ensure that campus-wide and departmental systems can be restored at an alternate location in the event of a disaster.
Work with with Campus Information Security and Policy team to develop and maintain complex security controls across all cloud environments.
Minimum 5 years total experience as a systems / cloud administrator.
At least one year of supervisory experience; managing teams of technical professionals
Experience with hands on management of a Vmware 5.5. (or higher) environment
Experience with public cloud solutions (AWS preferred, Azure or GCP as an alternative)
Experience with automation, in terms of systems and/or cloud management
Excellent scripting experience (Powershell preferred, python or ruby as an alternative)
Experience supporting large enterprises with numerous diverse systems and customers
Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner across the organization and at varying levels.
Has knowledge, skills and abilities associated with complex problem identification and resolution.
Requires knowledge of other areas of IT, and how they interact.
Experience with a Cloud Management platform
Working knowledge of Red Hat Linux and Windows operating systems, in order to perform rudimentary troubleshooting
Experience with Terraform and Packer
Hardware management with Dell OME and/or HP iLO for firmware updates , patches, etc.
Great customer service skills : patience and persistence to work with a variety of different customers
Practical experience supporting a variety of solutions within AWS.
Experience with automation frameworks to the extent that you can perform as a mentor to the rest of the team
