Carilion Clinic’s Legal Services Department provides comprehensive legal advice and support concerning all aspects of its health care enterprise. The Associate General Counsel reports to the Vice President, Managing Director Legal Services, and the primary focus of this opportunity will be assisting with the contracting functions of Carilion. Specific responsibilities include:
*Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a broad spectrum of contracts to include areas such as purchasing (supply chain and materials management), IT, real estate, employment and outside staffing;
*Reviewing and analyzing arrangements between hospitals and other parties on compliance for Stark, Anti-Kickback Statute, and other fraud and abuse laws, EMTALA, HIPAA, antitrust laws, and any other regulatory requirements applicable to such arrangements;
*Assisting with the development of contractual models as well as policies and procedures;
*Conducting legal research, as necessary;
*Willing to develop new areas of sub-specialty as needs may arise;
*Working effectively with management and other members of the Department (6 attorneys and 1 administrative/executive assistant) as well as in conjunction with outside counsel, with limited supervision.
Education: Doctor of Jurisprudence degree required.
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience as outside counsel within a corporate or health care law department. Similar in-house experience with a hospital or health system may be considered.
Licensure/certification: Eligible to practice as an attorney within the Commonwealth of Virginia via a Virginia license or in-house counsel designation.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be a self-starter with an attention to detail who meets deadlines with changing priorities and who has excellent judgment and decision-making skills.
