This is a non-tenure-track faculty position with an initial term of 3 years. The anticipated start date is by September 2019.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor seeks candidates for a Lecturer, who will be primarily responsible for coordinating and teaching the Mechanical Engineering senior capstone design class (ME450). Typical enrollment in ME450 is 110-130 students per semester. The Lecturer's main responsibilities include:
- Working with industry, entrepreneurial, and academic sponsors to develop 40-60 challenging mechanical engineering design projects per year suitable for a one semester design-build-verify experience, including the management of intellectual property with sponsors.
- Educating students regarding the design process: including acquiring customer needs, design ethnography, project management, budgeting, literature and patent reviews, developing engineering specifications, functional decomposition, concept generation and selection, detailed design and engineering drawing (CAD), design for manufacturing and environment, ethics, safety, engineering modeling, analysis and optimization, communication, prototyping, and testing.
- Directly supervising 5-6 student teams on their project activities and conducting rigorous oral and written design reviews throughout the term evaluating these topics and project and budget management.
- Coordinating the instructional team (typically 3-5 faculty members, a graduate assistant, and supporting staff members) on developing the syllabus, inviting guest lecturers, and aiding in lectures and projects. Various instructional resources, lab spaces, and events are also to be coordinated as part of the role.
The Lecturer is also expected to support instructional needs in other classes and provide departmental services when needed. Qualifications include either (a) an earned PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field or (b) a Master’s degree with significant teaching in engineering and/or professional experience in engineering practice. In addition, all applicants should have a strong commitment to teaching as evidenced by their resume and statement of teaching interests and philosophy.
