Fellow, Diversity - Newsroom
The Newsroom Diversity Fellowship will help MPR News develop the next generation of public media talent; provide pathways for people from underrepresented backgrounds who are seeking careers as reporters, newscasters, show producers, digital producers, and editors; and create exceptional content for MPR News platforms.
The fellowship is designed for an early- to mid-career individual who has two or more years of experience in journalism or communications, who seeks to strengthen their skills in media, and who can help diversify the talent pool within public radio. We are seeking applicants whose unique life experiences will contribute to a broader understanding of the communities we serve and who have potential to make notable contributions to the news profession. This individual must be a deft writer and know how to tell a compelling story. The goal is to give the Fellow full access to our newsroom, along with its tools and resources, to help the individual learn the ins and outs of one of the foremost public media organizations in the nation.
The Fellow will participate in four rotations within the newsroom. The rotations will include reporting and digital production, and two other rotations that might involve show production, newscast writing/editing, or other areas of focus. A supervisor will be assigned to manage the Fellow’s overall experience. In addition, within each rotation, a mentor will be assigned to help with day-to-day assignments and guidance. The Fellow will be immersed within the team and be given the opportunity to learn from established media professionals at the top of their field.
The Fellow will participate in four, three-month rotations during the course of one year. The Newsroom will determine two of the four rotations. The third and fourth rotations will be determined jointly by the Fellow and the newsroom based on the individual’s career interests and skills. As part of the overall rotation, the Fellow will receive hands-on training to continue to build upon their skill sets.
First Rotation: Reporting
This rotation will give the fellow a solid foundation for subsequent rotations. During this rotation, the fellow will learn our systems along with our summer interns. The fellow will learn the basics of gathering sound, interviewing for broadcast, writing for radio, audio editing and production in our Dalet system, how the newsroom is structured, and how our reporting teams work.
By the end of the rotation, the fellow will be reporting stories for our radio and digital platforms, including:
Web briefs and stories
Radio packages for our two magazine programs, Morning Edition and All Things Considered
Second Rotation: Digital production
During this rotation, the fellow will learn how to produce stories in our digital content management system (CMS), how to prepare photographs for publication, and hone copyediting and headline-writing skills. The fellow will also learn about our social media channels and prepare posts as well as work with our reporters to produce Facebook Live. There will also be room for the fellow to write digital-first stories, create video and photo stories.
By the end of this rotation, the fellow will be able to:
Rewrite a radio script into a story ready for digital, attach photographs, and publish to the website
Write digital-first stories
Write headlines with eye toward search-engine optimization
Learn basics of online analytics via Chartbeat and Google Analytics
Third and fourth rotations: To be determined by Fellow and newsroom during the course of the fellowship
As part of the application process, applicants to the Newsroom Diversity Fellowship will be asked to propose a project that would deepen their expertise on a given topic. We would encourage applicants to think about their own life experiences and how that may contribute to the proposed project. The topic could be content-driven or seek to enhance their knowledge about an aspect within public radio news. Ideally, the Fellow could work on the project as much as possible throughout the various assignments, allowing the individual to see the connection from one rotation to the next.
Example 1: Fellow proposes to report extensively on the intersection of race and the criminal justice system in the Twin Cities. The individual would spend the first rotation reporting and producing stories about the issue – which would also involve interviewing, finding the news, and building relationships within the affected communities. On the next rotation working with the digital team, the Fellow could pitch new angles of the story with online video explainers, Facebook Live segments and other components. On the third rotation, the Fellow could work as a producer and help plan some call-in shows, for which they would book guests and help prepare the host for a robust live radio conversation on the topic.
Example 2: The fellow could propose something entirely different, such as mastering audio storytelling. This goal could be the through-line for every rotation as the individual learns to build sound-rich, smartly written stories and newscast items or even digital stories with embedded audio. The third rotation could be spent improving the sound of our newscasts. A fourth rotation could involve working with our audio engineers.

Completed bachelor’s degree or at least 2 years professional relevant work experience
Additionally, minimum two years’ experience in journalism or communication
Life experiences which will help diversify the pool of talent in public radio (for example, extensive overseas experience, fluency in more than one language, overcoming difficult personal or family circumstances, extensive knowledge of at least one community of color, significant community service, successful careers in other fields, and the like)
Strong writing, research and communication skills

Proven ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines
Proficiency in Spanish, Hmong or Somali
Experience using audio production or editing equipment
