The Career Coach will engage students in a strategic career development process to assess student needs, provide coaching, connections, feedback and resources based on student needs and degree program. The Career Coach will have the knowledge to work across different industries at a high level, in order to meet marketplace demands, and contribute to the overall mission of the Career Development Office and Michigan Ross. This role will focus on either consulting, tech, the self-directed search, or a combination of those areas, depending upon the applicant’s background, experience, and knowledge.
Duties and Responsibilities

Individual & Group Coaching
Provides individual and group career coaching services to all MBA students, with an emphasis on students in the assigned group ( full-time MBAs.
Coaching will include translating self-assessment results; reviewing/editing resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and job search correspondence; advising on search strategy approaches (networking, online tools); career transition, if applicable; and coaching on interviewing and negotiation approaches (including conducting mock interviews).
Leverage alumni network to provide one-on-one connections between students and employers/ alumni.
Customize the general career search process for students who are more exploratory in nature to enable students to achieve career target clarity faster.
Develop relationships with assigned students in particular, and proactively tracks their progress.
Program Design & Delivery
Conceptualize, innovate, develop, and deliver student programs and workshops (including guest speakers, self-assessment/career exploration, resume/personal branding, career transitions, etc.) to both domestic and international students for large and small audiences (ranging from 5 to 400).
Draw on industry/functional knowledge, trends, and professional networks to guide relevant programming and advance the exchange of knowledge between the students and alumni, recruiters, faculty, or other subject matter experts to enable student success.
Collaborate with Program Offices and other offices in order to ensure programming is consistent with student and program office needs and expectations.
Update and continually improves CDO education-related materials.
Through own efforts and collaboration with the CDO Employer Relations Team, maintain knowledge of recruitment practices, industry trends, faculty research, alumni base, student clubs, and student needs so as to remain vital and credible for advising purposes and incorporate Ross alumni and/or other guests into workshops/ programs.
Partner with Employer Relations Team to interact with corporate recruiters who visit campus via lunches, corporate presentations, club events and meetings.
Collaborate with CDO Employer Relations Team colleagues to be knowledgeable of campus recruiting practices and student outcomes. Likewise, informs Recruiting and Outreach team of new companies to pursue that may be interested in recruiting Ross students.
As requested, participate in applicable company recruitment strategy meetings.
In conjunction with Employer Relations Team, may accompany students on industry “treks” to designated cities, and company visits, as needed.
May travel to corporations to identify company opportunities to hire Ross students and stay abreast of corporate needs and expectations.
Supervision of Temporary Staff
As part of team, annually train and supervise designated student Peer Coaches in executing career coaching responsibilities.
Meet regularly with assigned Peer Coaches to provide guidance, hear concerns, and identify programming opportunities.
Solicit feedback and insights from Peer Coaches to enhance designated career community experience for students.
Collaborate with peer coaches to identify any gaps in career education and opportunities to advance students’ success.
As part of a high-functioning team, each coach is expected to contribute to the development, execution, and evaluation of multiple educational programs, which may include in-person, online, and as part of a group.
Professional Development & Special Projects
Engage relevant University of Michigan and peer school colleagues for purposes of program innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
Contribute to the overall programming content and CDO strategy and direction.
Remain reasonably conversant with all functions of CDO, including those beyond career coaching (recruitment and outreach, employment data, general administration).
Assume periodic special projects or committee memberships, as assigned.
A bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field and a minimum of five years overall work experience in career counseling/coaching and/or professional recruitment experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Familiarity with career counseling methods, process-oriented, and comfortable with ambiguity in the career decision process.
Experience working with students and demonstrated understanding of student development needs for different populations.
Experience in strategic planning and execution.
Demonstrated understanding of the intensive student, career-search experience.
Proven ability to successfully interact with a diverse group of people and to quickly establish rapport and credibility with students.
Excellent communication skills, diplomacy, discretion, and presentation skills.
Team-oriented, flexible and customer-service oriented manner.
Desire to learn, innovate, and integrate feedback into service delivery to continually improve impact.
Experience managing confidential information, exercising ethical professional judgment and student advisement.
Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and influence as a critical member of a team.
Proficient in Excel and PowerPoint.
Ability to utilize data to gain insights and make decisions.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks; meet multiple deadlines; and work collegially and collaboratively in a team environment.
Master’s degree in Business, Higher Education Administration or Counseling is strongly preferred.
Extensive experience and comfort with presenting information to groups of students (45-400 in number)
Experience in business is a plus (particularly the roles of consulting, technology, and/or areas of Social Impact).
Expertise in facilitating career or personality assessments (CareerLeader, MBTI, StrengthsFinder).
Previous experience with on-campus recruiting.
Skills testing may be required.
