Michigan State University Department of Animal Science invites qualified candidates to apply for the Clinton E. Meadows Endowed Chair for Dairy Cattle Management. The position was established in 1979 to provide proactive leadership to the MSU dairy team and the dairy industry in the area of dairy production. This is an annual year tenured endowed professor position with an appointment of 50% assignment in Extension and 50% research. The candidate will: 1) conduct and promote innovative and collaborative research that addresses critical challenges in dairy production relevant to Michigan; 2) communicate effectively science-based best practices in dairy production to dairy farmers and consultants; 3) develop training and build capacity of dairy professionals at all levels, and 4) provide leadership to the MSU dairy team and the Michigan dairy industry to promote its continued viability and growth
The Michigan dairy industry is a major contributor to the state economy ranking 1st in Michigan in agriculture, the state's second largest industry, and contributing over 20% of the farm gate receipts. It is one of the most progressive dairy industries in the U.S. and the world. The Michigan dairy industry has experienced remarkable growth in cow numbers and milk output in the past 20 years. Currently Michigan ranks 6th in the U.S. in total milk production, has the lowest average somatic cell count per cow and greatest milk production per cow in the U.S. Michigan's 420,000+ cows generate > $8 billion of commerce in the state each year. MSU and the Michigan dairy industry recognize that science-based management is essential for the Michigan dairy industry to thrive.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop and lead an internationally recognized research and extension program in a relevant area of dairy production. The candidate will possess a deep understanding of the dairy industry, its challenges and opportunities. The candidate will be an active researcher, leader and educator, able to interact effectively with farmers, consultants, veterinarians, scientists, and other dairy professionals. The candidate shall have expertise in one or more of the following areas of concentration: precision agriculture, management science, lactation, genetics, nutrition, reproduction, health, cow comfort, heifer management or milk quality/safety. The candidate is expected to build bridges among disciplines and to encourage and support excellence in dairy production programs at MSU.
Qualifications: Minimum requirements: Credentials appropriate for appointment to full professor with a doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited institution; a record of relevant scholarly accomplishments and documented success in obtaining extramural funding; a history of notable achievements in research, extension or education; outstanding written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to lead a team and interact effectively with colleagues, dairy producers and other members of the dairy community; ability to work effectively within diverse multi-cultural environments.
