This Cisco Wi-Fi focused entry to mid-level career position is a member of the Infrastructure & Security Technologies department, within Division of Technology Services, which manages numerous services and the data network infrastructure. This position focuses on the maintenance of our Cisco and Meraki enterprise wireless networks at our multiple sites. The engineer design, operational maintenance, life cycle management of wireless access points and controllers including installation, repair and replacement are all key tasks of this position. This position must understand the end-point's radio frequency spectrum and OSI stack interaction with the network and how services provided are consumed across the system. We are an academic, research and residential campus so a strong understanding of consumer, entertainment, IoT and enterprise products from companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Apple and Google are required. A CCNA-Wireless or higher is desired, or professional experience equivalent, for this person to be successful in this role.
This position also serves on the team as a support role to routing and switching network architecture services including Cisco ISE and Cisco Prime Infrastructure. Networking activities addressed by this position may include coordinating network design and maintenance, coordination of all services mostly in layers 1 through 3. This position works with and supports wireless data networks for a majority of the time; however, it also provides time as a backup to the campus carding office, unified communications, and as needed for other duties inside the team.
This position typically works from 7:30AM to 4:30PM, Monday – Friday, at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls campus site. The person in this position will occasionally be needed to work early morning, evening and weekend hours based on tasks required. The Division of Technology Services has several systems that require 24×7×365 up-time of hardware and software to ensure a safe environment is created on campus, the person filling this position will be expected to respond to issues as they arise regardless of hour or day of the week while working in the team. Scheduled maintenance periods are typically 4AM to 6AM Central time.
