Summary of Position: The Advancement Associate is responsible for supporting an advancement strategy that deepens engagement with key stakeholders and secures support for the University of Minnesota’s Global Programs and Strategy Alliance (GPS). Reporting to the Assistant Dean for International Programs and Engagement who leads the strategy for engagement, this individual will be a self-starter who is able to think creatively, prioritize workload, and work in close partnership with GPS unit directors and staff, as well as the University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF).
The GPS Alliance is the central international office for the University of Minnesota system. We support the University's mission by working closely with campuses, colleges, units, faculty and staff, students, and the community to comprehensively internationalize the University of Minnesota.
Critical areas of focus – (1) develop and support engagement strategies for various stakeholders, (2) manage a small fundraising portfolio under the guidance of the Assistant Dean, (3) steward current donors, and (4) plan donor and engagement events.
External relations and engagement (35%) Broaden external relations outreach to educate and engage various constituencies about the work of the GPS Alliance and global activity at the University. • Identify engagement opportunities to establish and expand engagement and philanthropy across numerous constituencies • Serve as a resource for staff across the GPS units • Identify best practices for engagement strategy and tactics
Donor portfolio management and development duties (35%) Develop and manage a small portfolio of donors and prospects under the guidance of the Assistant Dean. • Develop portfolio of potential individual donors; cultivate and solicit prospects • Maintain a robust annual fund program to secure gifts under $25,000 and build a pipeline of future major gift donors, in partnership with GPS communications and UMF • Develop, implement, and review an annual plan of work • Perform development-related administrative duties including timely entry of contact reports, database updates, budget management, and case statement development • Attend UMF development officer meetings, work in collaboration with UMF colleagues, and leverage UMF services • Ensure appropriate fundraising policies and practices are followed
Donor stewardship relations (15%) Coordinate a comprehensive stewardship program to build long-term giving relationships and a legacy of increasing support with donors and affinity groups by focusing on education, cultivation, and stewardship. • Develop and implement broad strategies for stewarding gifts • Collaborate with GPS staff to develop acknowledgment and recognition procedures that are consistent across audiences • Draft donation acknowledgement and stewardship letters in collaboration with GPS communications • Coordinate with UMF on stewardship activities including annual reports on endowments • Harness database capabilities to generate targeted stewardship mailings • Coordinate gift processing and drafting of Memoranda of Agreement with UMF staff
Events coordination (15%) Plan, coordinate, and manage strategy, logistics, and budgets for events that support GPS external relations and donor stewardship and engagement. • Coordinate and execute engagement, cultivation, and stewardship events • Collaborate with GPS staff to establish and execute plans • Develop and oversee event budgets and forecast expenses for future events
BA/BS degree or 4 years combined equivalent education and work experience
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including customer service, conflict resolution, and facilitation
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Ability to collaborate with partners from a variety of diverse backgrounds and provide counsel to multiple internal and external stakeholders
Ability to manage multiple priorities
Demonstrated experience working with databases, websites, and related technologies
1-3 years of development, alumni relations, project or event management, or transferable experience
