Where the Chemistry Happens
Direct all the functions of Operations at the EBN U.S. Construction Systems manufacturing sites to maintain the supply of our products at a competitive cost and a high level of quality and service to our customers. Performance directly affects profitability of the business unit.
Directly lead the operations activities at all U.S. Construction Systems manufacturing sites (Mattawan, MI; Levittown, PA; Streetsboro, OH; Houston, TX; Newark, CA; Acworth, GA; and Lancaster, TX). Responsible for all operational functions, including: Production, Maintenance, Site Logistics and Planning, Engineering, Quality, Finance, and Environmental/Health/Safety/Security (EHSS). Ensure that operations are performed in a safe & environmentally sound manner, and that EHSS requirements, such as Responsible Care Management Systems (RCMS), Risk Management Planning (RMP), and Process Safety Management (PSM) are achieved and maintained. Provide direct leadership, coaching and mentoring to the site mangers.
Manage the sites' human capital through the attraction, development, and retention of quality employees at all levels within the sites. Establish and maintain cultures of continuous improvement for both the employees and the organizations. Manage, coach and motivate the organization in a results-oriented way. Ensure that direct reports manage, coach and motivate their employees. Promote leadership at every level in the organization to maximize empowerment and job satisfaction. Ensure that employees have the proper information, training, and resources to be successful.
Ensure production of the required products in time, within quality specifications, at or below budgeted cost at all sites. Ensure production scheduling to be in alignment with sales forecast & production planning while maintaining production efficiency. Ensure forecast & usage of supplies & raw materials are balanced between demand and budget. Support efforts to commercialize new products and projects designed to improve processes and capacity. Ensure that systems are in place for fully meeting all customer requirements for quality, service, and delivery and that quality requirements, such as ISO 9001, are achieved and maintained. Ensure that effective systems of continuous improvement, nonconformance management, and corrective and preventative action are in place and used throughout the organization. Develop and maintain effective Lean/Six Sigma and Operational Excellence programs at the sites.
Participate in special projects supporting the needs of the company and the EBN businesses on an as needed basis. Projects may include participation on things such as business team, cost reduction teams, quality teams, etc.
Manage and coordinate the entire manufacturing operations, administrative functions including safety, environment, health, Human Resources, operating budgets, and capital spending and expenses for the named sites. Provide leadership to the sites including the creation and implementation of the sites' visions, strategies, and tactical plans in alignment with the business strategies, which will continuously improve the functioning of the operations.
Create an environment that supports the attraction, development, and retention of high quality human capital. Make decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative and that have a value-added impact on manufacturing activities and performance. Determine program objectives and requirements to support the achievement of the strategic plan. Maintain efficient and effective manufacturing operations that produce high quality, low cost products. Provide leadership in communicating the corporate and business strategies to the sites and fostering the appropriate site cultures. Responsible for leading ZIM (Zero Incident Mindset), Journey Towards Excellence Program, Zero Loss of Containment (ZLOC) and RCMS programs.
Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Formula for Success
Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline is required; preferably Chemical or Process Engineering.
10 years or more of successful leadership experience in a chemical process manufacturing operation. Experience as a manager of either Production or Engineering is required.
Graduate degree in engineering or an MBA is a strong plus.
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with senior level business management on a routine basis is required.
Critical thinking, decision making, strong interpersonal skills, ability to develop others, strong leadership presence, broad knowledge of various plant manufacturing functions and processes.
Ability to establish and maintain a positive culture and handle employee relations issues, labor relations, Union relationships, teambuilding and employee engagement and involvement processes.
Ability through education and experience to recognize, question, & develop solutions for technical issues in production, engineering, maintenance, logistics and supply chain, quality, environment, health and safety.
Ability to bring functions of production, engineering and maintenance, quality, technical, commercial, and EHS into a synergistic, supportive and cohesive team within the business unit.
Leadership and oversight of all Construction Systems Business Line manufacturing plant operations (circa 340 FTE).
Production of finished product on time, on quality, and on cost.
Delivery of finished product to distribution centers and customers from manufacturing plants.
Assure compliance with federal, state and local laws and requirements.
Prepare operations budget for relevant plants.
Capital budgeting and capital project management.
Must follow all safety guidelines and support company safety programs and requirements. Must report all unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses immediately to appropriate managers. Responsible for the safety of themselves and others.
Must adhere to all state, local, federal and company guidelines for environmental situations.
Must understand and follow all quality and EHSS initiatives and processes for ISO 9001, RCMS, RMP, and other regulations, procedures and processes as they pertain to job responsibilities.
Maintain focus at all times on environmental, health and safety aspects from planning through execution of tasks assigned. Ensure support of applicable Process Safety programs through compliance audits, capital project reviews, regulatory PHAs (revalidations, clean-sheets) and other hazard / risk assessment activities as required. Ensure the on time completion of Process Safety related mechanical integrity programs.
Ensure the utilization of Management of Change (MOC) to assure timely communication and training of process related changes. As required, participate in any process safety related incident investigations and completion of assigned action items in a timely manner.
