The Senior Research Systems Administrator/Research Systems Administrator is responsible for effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware, including high-end graphic processing units (GPUs) and related infrastructure for the Division of Applied Mathematics. This position serves in a highly technical research environment and aides with the development of hardware infrastructure in order to support research innovation. Additionally, this position will support mathematical and scientific resources by providing installation, configuration and maintenance of software packages, including compilers, visualization, statistical, mathematical, and productivity software.
The Senior Research Systems Administrator/Research Systems Administrator works to solve technical concerns in the initiation and planning phases of new research projects and methodologies. These activities may include the definition of needs, benefits, technical strategy, technical analysis and design, research and development throughout the life of the research project, and testing and rolling out solutions. Participation on projects is focused on successfully transitioning a project from its design stage to full implementation, from a technical perspective.
Bachelorâ™s degree preferred
For Grade 10E: 3 - 4 years of experience with Linux systems administration
For Grade 11E: 5 or more years of experience with Linux systems administration
Problem resolution and troubleshooting skills; e.g. dump reading, traces, etc
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (both oral and written)
Strong ability to multi-task and prioritize activities
Conceptual knowledge of all and in-depth knowledge of some of the following: Linux operating systems, technical architectures, security, networking, middleware, webservers and database systems
In depth knowledge of Linux, including Ubuntu and Red Hat
Knowledge of programming languages including some of the following: Perl, Python, Julia, R, Matlab, PHP, API integration, etc.
Use of source control systems such as Git
Use of software configuration management tools, including Puppet, Ansible, Virtualenv
Use of log correlation software, such as Sumologic
Knowledge of large-scale computing platforms such as Globus, HPC environments, AWS, Kubernetes, Jupyter Hub, etc.
Knowledge of research regulations, protocols, and data use requirements affecting technology, such as IRB, Animal Care, HIPAA, FERPA, etc.
Machine Learning Frameworks, including Tensorflow
Configuring, integrating, and administering web-based interactive study platforms, such as those that use Mechanical Turk
Windows experience - understand basics of storage permissions and group management, integration of Windows services with Linux environments and Windows applications to access Linux systems
Hands on experience with some of the following preferred: Ubuntu, RHEL, Puppet, Python, R, Tensorflow, Matlab, SumoLogic or log correlation software.
The grade of the position is contingent on the qualifications of the chosen candidate.
