Supervises daily operation of procurement team that acquires goods and services including for all UC Santa Cruz programs and departments. Responsibilities include equipment acquisition, contracting for professional services, business contracts, maintenance services, consulting and personal services.
Leads departmental procurement staff and makes work assignments that are subject to a moderate level of control and review. Directs purchasing staff to complete assignments using established purchasing guidelines, procedures, and policies. Directs purchasing activities of limited scope and impact to the organization. May perform more complex purchasing assignments within functional area of responsibility.
The Assistant Director of Procurement is responsible for managing a variety of campus procurement functions and a staff of six procurement specialists, who are part of the Procurement & Supply Chain Services Department. The Assistant Director serves as a key member of the departmental leadership team, and effectively interacts with other departmental managers and their respective units (Strategic Sourcing, e-Procurement, Business Contracts, Copy/Mail/Receiving Services).
The incumbent responsibilities include the following:
Supporting the procurement and related business contract needs of the campus community, consistent with UC and campus procurement policies, and regulatory and contractual requirements, including state and federal contracting requirements;
Ensuring that services and products are obtained in ways that satisfactorily balance economic value to the customer with campus and University sustainability and social justice values and objectives;
Implementing the campus' and UC's long-term procurement strategy that focuses on strategic sourcing, analytics, effective contracting, and high-quality service delivery;
Leading, training, and developing the Procurement Services staff and, effectively utilizing numerous automated procurement and contract management systems including CruzBuy (Jaggaer) and Cal-U-Source (GEP). Other technology systems include Docusign, Benefit Bank, and Insurance Tracking Services.

Bachelor's degree in business administration, or bachelor's degree with professional certification in supply management or procurement, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Management skills required to lead department, including management of staff performance and development, team building and communications, resolution of issues and conflicts, review and approval of work, and hiring and training employees.
Demonstrated knowledge of and understanding of the following:
Procurement and supply management applicable to large, higher education or other highly-complex organizations.
General principles of public procurement, such as the California Public Contract Code and business and delivery models.
