The University of Michigan School of Information seeks qualified individuals as Intermittent Lecturers to provide instruction in our new Master of Applied Data Science degree. Interested individuals should have Python programming expertise and fluency in data science skills and techniques. We are offering a part-time, remote (work from anywhere) in the US or on-site position. We expect the applicant to be able to support courses such as data manipulation, exploratory data analysis, math methods, visual exploration of data, and experiment design and analysis. We seek candidates who are passionate about teaching and using computation and data science to build a better world.
Students in the online degree program take four-week classes on the Coursera platform. Each class is facilitated by an instructional team that includes a lead instructor and several support staff. Under the direction of the lead instructor, the successful candidate will serve as front line instructional and student support, and participate in the continuous process of program improvement. Given the structure of the online degree program, there will be a variety of classes that change from month to month. Course assignments are made in advance giving teaching faculty ample time to prepare. However, these responsibilities will be very fast paced. Thus, it will be critical to have strong organizational skills and the willingness and ability to work in a dynamic environment.
This position will be responsible for assisting in the delivery of UMSI courses on Coursera, grading, holding online office hours, managing autograders, answering student questions and communicating clearly with students, and facilitating small group online discussions and student conversations. Demonstrate respect for students as individuals and foster a respectful atmosphere in the online learning environment. This position will also be expected to work collaboratively with lead instructors, other instructional team members, and UMSI staff (who help with administration and student advising/life functions) to ensure that students receive an excellent education and are aware of support services in the larger UM and UMSI communities, continually learn about the courses and future offerings, the program, and effective online pedagogy.
This position has flexible with work hours and the successful candidate must be willing to coordinate with other instructional team members to ensure daily/evening/weekend coverage for students who may live in different time zones.
Bachelor’s degree in Data Science or a related field, such as Information, Computer science, or Statistics
Strong oral presentation and communication skills

Programming: proficiency in Python; pandas; numpy, scipy, regex, or beautiful soup libraries; and Jupyter Notebooks
Mathematics: linear algebra, probability and statistics, strong algebra skills, preference for multi-variable calculus.
Experiment Design: statistical principles of experiment design (power analysis, lab and field experiments), data analysis (regressions, differences-in-differences, instrumental variables).
Data Mining: Basic data types (itemsets, matrices, and sequences), basic machine learning tasks, pattern extraction, large-scale data analytics.
Master’s degree in Data Science or a related field, such as Information, Computer science, or Statistics
Teaching experience particularly in the online environment
Experience taking online classes, particularly with the Coursera platform
