Environmental Studies: Specialist in Ecology (Open until filled. Apply by 9/26/19)
The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Specialist in Ecology under the direction of Professor Christopher Wilmers. The Specialist will conduct fieldwork for a long-term field study on the ecology of Mountain Lions in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California and will be responsible for assisting in the capture, anesthetization and collaring of adult pumas using hounds and cage trap; the capture and collaring of juvenile pumas; GPS and VHF tracking of puma adults and cubs; visitation to puma kill sites; and the placement of remote camera traps and other field activities as they arise. The position will also require the Specialist to be knowledgeable of the Santa Cruz Mountains' study areas; organize and maintain field equipment, operate 4x4 trucks and ATVs on remote forest roads; coordinate with land-owners throughout the study area; and successfully work as a collaborative member of the research team
ACADEMIC TITLE Junior Specialist
SALARY Minimum starting salary is $39,500, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
BS degree in wildlife biology or related field at the time of application.
At least four years of experience trapping mountain lions with cage traps and hound dogs in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
At least four years of experience conducting kill site necropsies of mountain lion kills.
Experience operating ATV's and 4x4 trucks.
POSITION AVAILABLE As soon as possible after initial review of applications.
DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointment will be full-time for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
