The Director, Student and Academic Support Systems, a senior-level position within Information Technology Services, Yale’s central IT organization, provides technical stewardship and strategic leadership for the applications that enable students, staff, faculty, and parents to transact, manage, report on, and administer the academic life of students from the admissions cycle through to the completion of their studies and certain parts of their lives as alumni. These student information systems support functional areas including recruitment, admissions, academic records, financial aid, course registration, academic advising, curriculum and course information management, self-service applications, and related interdependent systems.
There are currently more than 70 applications of student and faculty administration in this technology portfolio. The Director will partner with leaders across the University to build an understanding of common and unique technology needs. Using these relationships, the director will develop a strategy and implementation plan to architect an integrated set of technology solutions, that simplifies both the user experience and the technology footprint.
Reporting to the Associate CIO for Enterprise Applications, the Director is responsible for leading and building a team of professionals and cultivating a team culture of community service and supporting and encouraging professional contributions to the higher education technology community beyond Yale.
The director needs to be a visionary: Partnering with colleagues and the team to develop a vision and overarching strategies for realizing it.

Under the guidance of the deputy provost for Academic Resources and the University Registrar and in partnership with other key stakeholders that includes among others, the Poorvu Center for teaching and learning, University Financial Aid, the Bursar, Student Financials, Yale College, the Graduate School, Student Life and the Professional Schools, the director will:
Serve as a key participant in improving decision-making and governance for academic systems that impact students and faculty. Actively providing leadership for the prioritization of investments.
Provide leadership and direction for implementing solutions that streamlines their processes and enables them to make better informed, data-driven decisions.
The Director will provide leadership and direction on key operational and portfolio initiatives in the student systems area and lead the Student Information Systems working group meetings in partnership with the Registrar and participate as required in the Graduate and professional registrar and financial aid discussions.
Establish trusted relationships with key stakeholders that includes functional leaders and academic administrators across the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Professional Schools and IT leadership.
Orchestrate operational application support and maintenance with a service-oriented focus and function as the focal point for problem escalation.
Plan and guide the current and future student information systems environment.
Act as a consultative technical leader to the diverse set of clients to build an understanding of common and unique needs, and provide technical leadership to promote strategic technologies that serve the broad community.
Maintain a prioritized portfolio of IT projects and, as part of an annual planning process with campus partners, will create long-term and annual technology roadmaps that align with the goals and strategies of the University, the clients, and Yale ITS.
Coach staff and build a strong, service-oriented team focused on improving and streamlining Yale’s technology environments.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and ten years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Exceptional ability to prioritize and meet multiple, competing responsibilities and to lead others to do the same. Ability to see the big picture and translate to workable tasks. Experience creating alignment between technical and functional partners.
Proven understanding of student and academic systems, application lifecycle mgmt. and software development lifecycle, especially in areas of student information. Strong knowledge and understanding of service-oriented architecture, cloud computing, data, architecture and web technologies.
Proven experience leading teams in contemporary development practices, including agile methodologies, user interface design and responsive design.
Proven ability to facilitate and act as a catalyst for change and build a shared vision with others. Ability to consistently model desired organizational values and behaviors. Excellent planning and organization skills.
Proven ability with influencing, consensus-building, negotiating, mediation and leadership skills. Proven ability to build and maintain influence and trust. Ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate value while also maintaining flexibility.
Preferred Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree (an advanced degree preferred) in a technology related field; 10 years’ experience with institution-scale student information systems in a large, research university; experience with Ellucian Banner, Instructure Canvas for LMS, Technolutions Slate for admissions, Oracle and SQL database and software development with Groovy on Grails or Java.
