TheChief Information Officer (CIO) will join the UT System at a time of enormousopportunity and potential impact. As a forward thinking and exceptionalcommunicator, the CIO will provide impactful leadership that will translateinto effective policy, planning, and action, to further the goals of thesystem's strategic plan and promote UT's role in the State of Tennessee and theworld. The UT System is embarking upon the launch of a new System wideEnterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation encompassing financial, humancapital management, and potentially student information operations, which willbe transformative for the University.
TheCIO will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer and will provide thedynamic leadership required to support the UT System mission and to further thestrategies needed to achieve goals outlined in the strategic framework. Collaborationamong staff members, other UT System staff, and UT campuses is essential tosuccess. The CIO is expected to create an environment that promotescollaboration, and to work effectively and persuasively with key leaders at allUT institutions, members of the Board of Trustees, and senior leaders in the UTSystem. The CIO will provide the University leaders and the Board of Trusteeswith guidance, strategic thinking, and general information on all areas of UTSystem information technology and security activities. This includes developingreports and information for the board and senior leadership as necessary, andpresenting periodically.
The CIO will be responsible for settingthe system-wide IT strategy and the following:
Creating system-wide standards, data definitionsand other common policies.
Fostering an organizational culture that supportsintra-organization teamwork and collaboration.
Leading the development and implementation ofsystem wide digital strategies based on a solid understanding of academic andadministrative requirements.
Leading the collaboration of campus IT management.
Ensuring the effective planning and implementationof information technology projects.
Partnering in the leadership and implementation ofthe new ERP platform.
Managing the ongoing support of statewide ITservices and systems.
Leading information security best practices alongwith the chief information security officer, including security policymanagement.
Communicating effectively with a broad range ofconstituents.
Translating vision, strategic direction, and long-term goals into specific projects and initiatives with clear timelines.
TheCIO will also work with institutional CIOs, Chief Business Officers, and otherstakeholders to assess the current model of providing information technologyservices and will play a key role in the development of a cloud strategy,improving business process standardization, establishing a data managementprogram, and exploring new ways to collaborate, consolidate, and streamlinenon-instructional activities. As a key leader in the UT System, the CIO willserve as a partner, trusted colleague, collaborator, and facilitator who canadvance the effective and efficient use of information technology across the UTSystem. The CIO will demonstrate the nimbleness and flexibility necessary tolead in a complex, multi- institution environment while advancing operationalgoals that include process standardization, data management, and consolidationor centralization of services where warranted. The CIO will be an active partnerin leading information technology activities in the UT System with thePresident of the UT System, the vice presidents for Administration, Finance,Academic and Student Affairs, and University Relations. As an ambassadorand communicator, the CIO will possess the creativity and listening skills tobuild relationships at all levels, within the UT system, the Board of Trustees,and individual campuses, as well as externally with state legislators andorganizations.
