Indianapolis Gastroenterology & Hepatology has an immediate opening for a full time Histology Technician to work 40 hours per week. Under general supervision, the Histology Technician prepares microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic purposes; performs tissue stains, histology and cytology procedures.
Primary Responsibilities: • Prepares microscopic slides on human tissue for diagnostic purposes; including fixation, dehydration, infiltration, embedding, and microtomy to paraffin processed tissue. • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of test examinations. • Specimen processing to include all computer entry. • Determines level of section required and sections tissue blocks. • Performs histochemical stains on a variety of tissues, per the Pathologist’s directions, to assist in diagnosis. • Sorts slides to be delivered to proper location for pathologist diagnosis. • Prepares and maintains all necessary reagents, including stains, alcohols and paraffin according to proper specifications. • Maintains and cleans laboratory equipment per manufacturer specifications in accordance with policies and procedures, as well as preventive maintenance schedule. • Adheres to laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. • Follows laboratory’s procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance. • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. • Maintains a general working knowledge of laboratory safety, infection control policies, regulated waste protocols, disaster plan, chemical and fire safety policies and procedures. • Maintains good interdepartmental relations. • Ensures all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. • Conducts business in a responsible manner that complies with all state, CLIA, CAP, OSHA and HIPAA regulations, or Joint Commission as applicable and incorporates these compliance practices into daily routines.
• BS degree in Biology with ASCP and HTL certification. • At least 2 years of experience in Histology in an approved laboratory under the supervision of a Pathologist.
