Washington University in St. Louis, a leading national research university, invites nominations and applications for the newly created position of Associate Vice Chancellor & Chief Operating Officer for Information Technology (COO). The COO will lead the implementation and direction of IT governance and strategic investments and will collaborate in optimizing the structure, approach, and methods of the University’s central IT function. Particular areas of leadership for the COO include IT strategic planning; IT performance evaluation and reporting; IT finance, administration, and resource management; IT communications; and leadership of the Program Management Office. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology & Chief Information Officer (CIO), the COO will deliver results that are relevant to University strategies, priorities, financial imperatives, and constraints.
The COO will bring significant experience operating at a senior level, skill at building effective relationships, and expertise working closely with executive colleagues and other internal and external clients. The COO will possess a broad understanding of the business of higher education, including all aspects of its administrative and service environment informed by an awareness of the factors that influence technology strategy and operations. The COO will demonstrate drive and commitment in pursuing individual and organizational goals and will have the ability to develop and shape policy and strategy in order to deliver transformational change. The COO will possess a proven track record in leading multi-disciplinary teams and in recruiting, developing, and retaining high-performing IT professionals in a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Successful candidates will have 10-plus years of experience in information technology management, including experience in program and project planning, management, and budgeting plus, ideally, exposure to the major components of a full-service IT function. An advanced degree in information systems, information technology, or relevant other field including business or an academic discipline in which technological fluency and expertise play a prominent role is preferred, although candidates with substantial relevant experience that applies to the scope of this role will be considered.
