Essential Job Duties:
The primary responsibility for this Research Assistant is to work with the Water Resiliency Specialist with coordinating and implementing an extension-supporting research program in rural water across the state of North Carolina. The assistant will consult with the Water Resiliency Specialist and help manage field research trials and demonstrations involving irrigation, drainage, flow monitoring, plot planting, spraying, scouting, and harvesting. Planning and implementation of the program will involve interactions with graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, research faculty, producers, extension specialists, county extension agents, commodity associations, and other stakeholders.
The assistant will contribute to research/extension publications, presentations, and reports. Responsibilities include assisting in the planning, construction, installation, and maintenance of both lab and field experiments, as well as monitoring stations in the field. The position will be responsible for the installation, monitoring and downloading of electronic control systems and data acquisition devices (Examples may include: Campbell scientific, Arduino, HOBO, ISCO, Trimble, Topcon, GPS yield mapping, RTK elevation mapping). This researcher position will coordinate plot management with graduate students, research faculty, research personnel, growers, agents, and specialists. This position will also manage collection and laboratory analysis on soil properties, harvested biomass, and water quality. Field data acquisition, quality control, and preliminary processing in excel, power-point and other programs will be required.
The position will be required to assist in the set up for extension/research workshops and meetings, agent training, and field events. Travel is required including occasional overnight and weekend travel.
This position is located in Plymouth, North Carolina.
The position will also be responsible for checking unit inventory and maintaining lab and field instruments and tools. The position will also supervise undergraduate lab workers. Travel to meetings and labs in Raleigh or other parts of the state will occasionally be required, depending on departmental and faculty requests.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Basic understanding of agricultural crop production systems
Basic knowledge of flow, precipitation, weather, and groundwater monitoring equipment
Basic understanding of control and data system programing (examples may include: Arduino microcontrollers, raspberry pi, HOBO, or Campbell data loggers) that are routinely used to control and monitor hydrological apparatus.
Ability to prepare tables, figures, and illustrations of the research data, throughout the data analysis protocol.
Must be capable of using all manners of shop tools, wood, Plexiglas, and metalworking, and have a competent knowledge of hardware applications. *Operation of basic agricultural machinery, examples: GPS equipment, sprayers, tractors, combines, weigh wagons, backhoes, and/or trenchers.
Experience in the area of water resources management (drainage, irrigation, land leveling, water quality, wetlands) including fieldwork and equipment monitoring.
Required license or certification:
A valid driver's license is required for travel. North Carolina driver's license required to be obtained and maintained within 60 days of start date.
NC Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire is also required.
