Summary: The Director of Finance and Accounting is a strategic thought-partner and reports to the CFO/COO. This role requires hands-on and participative management, and the ability to lead and develop the business office team. Serves as the functional lead over the following: a) internal and external financial reporting, including annual financial statement audit and retirement plan audit, b) general ledger, c) accounts receivable, d) accounts payable, e) payroll, f) tax reporting and compliance, g) accounting for contributions received and made, h) technical accounting matters, i) assists in the preparation and monitoring of the school’s annual operating budget, and j) system and process improvements. Ensures compliance with GAAP as well as provides senior management and customers with meaningful and transparent information.
Essential Duties: • Responsible for the general operations of the accounting department, including month-end close, the annual audit, financial reporting, accounts payable, variance analysis, account reconciliations, payroll, and ad-hoc reporting. Designs, implements and oversees related accounting systems. Ensures compliance with GAAP and IRS regulations. • Supervises four accounting staff: provides mentoring, training, direction, and evaluation. • Develops and ensures that Greenhill School has the policies, procedures, internal controls, and segregation of duties and systems in place to support effective program implementation. • Coordinates and oversees the annual financial statement audit and annual retirement plan audit. Prepares the annual financial statements including footnotes, and prepares the annual financial statements for the school’s retirement plan. • Preparation of the schools Form 990 and 990-T. Understanding of broader tax matters applicable to not-for-profit entities (1099, gaming winnings, raffles, payroll tax compliance, W-2’s; etc). • Reviews and recommends proper accounting treatment, and implements complex accounting transactions for the school. • Assists the CFO/COO with reporting/analysis for the board of directors and related committees (Audit and Risk Management, Finance, and Investment). • Works collaboratively with academic departments, to educate them regarding finance procedures and to explore how the finance function can support program operations. • Oversees cash management. Coordinates cash needs with CFO/COO and outsourced CIO. • Provides leadership to identify, coordinate, facilitate, and implement ongoing process improvement opportunities. Stays informed on industry best practices. • Assist the CFO/COO in the development of the annual budget, long-term budgetary planning, and forecasting. • Reconcile monthly all investment activity of the school’s endowment fund. • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills: • Knowledge of GAAP and not-for-profit accounting • Knowledge of budgeting • Knowledge of business process improvements • Knowledge of financial reporting and analysis • Ability to think strategically and see the “big picture” • Strong verbal and written skills • Ability to supervise several accounting staff • Ability to regularly work additional hours to meet deadlines and goals • Strong Microsoft Excel skills. Ability to build, create, and update excel files, quickly and accurately.
Qualifications: • CPA license required • Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree preferred • Public accounting experience at a Big 4 preferred • At least ten years’ experience of progressively responsible financial and administrative senior management experience, preferably in a not-for-profit, with the experience in an independent school • Ability to work with minimal direction and achieve positive results. • Experience in using the following software solutions preferred: 1) Senior Systems, 2) Blackbaud, 3) Paycom, and 4) FACTS.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: • Normal office conditions.
